Keyword research the right way
Start with YouTube's own autosuggest — type your seed keyword and a letter ("a", "b", "c"…) to harvest real long-tail queries people are searching for right now.
Validate volume with TubeBuddy or VidIQ. Look for keywords with a Search Volume score above 40 and a Competition score below 60 — that's the green zone.
Bonus tip: scan Google's People Also Ask box for the same keyword. If a question shows up on both Google and YouTube, you're sitting on a goldmine of evergreen demand.
Metadata that ranks (without sounding spammy)
Front-load the keyword in the first 60 characters of your title — that's the cutoff on mobile search results.
Repeat the keyword naturally in the first 2 lines of the description (above the "Show more" fold) and once more in the body.
Add 5–10 relevant tags. Tags barely move the needle in 2025, but they help YouTube understand context for related-video placement.
Don't forget the file name. Rename your upload from "final_v3.mp4" to "your-keyword.mp4" — it's a tiny signal, but it's free.
Retention is the real ranking factor
Since 2023, YouTube has openly admitted that audience retention and satisfaction (measured via surveys and Watch Later behavior) outweigh every metadata signal combined.
The first 30 seconds matter most. If 50% of viewers drop in the first 30 seconds, no SEO trick will save the video. Open with the payoff, not the intro.
Use pattern interrupts every 30–60 seconds: B-roll cuts, graphic overlays, sound effects, or a change in framing. The brain re-engages every time it sees something new.
